Cakes....of all shapes & sizes

Here are just a few of the cakes that I've created.....

Beth & Dario's Luau Wedding Shower Cake

Dang's 30th Birthday Cake

My brother Dave's 30th Birthday Cake

Dylan's 5th Birthday Cake

My Niece Kassidy's 8th Birthday Cake

Colby's 8th Birthday Cake

Tommy's 25th Birthday Cake & Memorial Day Cake....that later collapsed and never made it to Vermont

Lola turns ONE....and I survive my first blunder!!

My boyfriend Jimmy, his niece Lola turned the big 1 this September and I was asked by Heidi & Josh (the 'rents) to create her 1st birthday cake. It was my first, 1st Birthday cake and I was a little excited. They wanted a vanilla pound cake with strawberry buttercream frosting and a 2D picture of her from the back, dancing. So I go about making the cake ahead of time and don't ya know, me in all my infinite wisdom ended up making a chocolate cake instead of the vanilla one they ordered. I know, I know, why didn't I look at my notes before hand, why didn't I double check?? Who knows, why I didn't check! So here it is 2 days before it's due and I have baked the wrong flavor cake. I was pretty much up a particular creek with about a paddle, if you will...Oh now if you know me, this is a typical situation that I tend to get myself into quite often. Now I have to bake the cake, decorate it and prepare it for transport all the day before it's due, so that leaves me with 1 day to do all of this. Now did I mention that I have to work that day too? I started a new job and I'm still in training, and had already switched my schedule around to have the day of the party off, so I was unable to get out of work. Looking back on it all, it was pretty much a caffeine induced blur. I remember getting pink frosting everywhere and having my hands stained HOT PINK for several days, but I don't remember how long it took me or why I forgot to take pictures of it. I do remember getting a message that everyone loved the cake and I was sadly missed because of a previous commitment. I did manage to get a picture of the cake after Lola got her piece. Which I know she enjoyed, after seeing pictures from the party!!

Oh and Josh, Heidi, I truly am sorry for her HOT PINK hands too!

Fall is upon us....

So in the next few weeks I plan on having some super yummy treats available. Keep and eye out.....

and if there is something YOU'D like me to make, let me know...I can do all sorts of customized treats for you!

"Go Big or Go Home"

My friends and I are kind of into theme parties, so when it came for my good friend Haidee to turn 30, we knew what had to be done.... A Sex in the City Birthday Bash!!! Beth, Ruth, Karen, Beth's Mom & Haidee's Mom turned the Legion into a Hot Pink & Zebra striped oasis!! We munched on yummy food, downed a TON of drinks, and boy did we SHAKE it that night! I was honored with making the birthday girl's cake and I, of course had to stay on theme and went with a hot pink & zebra striped cake!

Oh and for all of you wondering...no actual Zebras were harmed in the making of this theme party!!

It's been a while.....

Well what can I say...It's been a while!!
I have completed my first wedding cake, it went off without a hitch.
The bride & groom were thrilled with their special treats on their big day. I only wish I had gotten my business cards printed before then, it would have been nice to have on hand for anyone that is looking for a cake or sweet treat!!

Oh and a very special thanks to my assistant for the day Jimmy, who helped deliver and set up the cake & cupcakes, I couldn't have done it without you!!

My First Wedding Cake

Ok, so I'm super excited!! I've been asked to make a Wedding Cake, actually it's Wedding Cupcakes with a main table cake that will be mostly for show!! Jen & Nelson have chosen simple white roseds with a lovely sangria colored ribbon to be their design. The cake itself will be chocolate with raspberry filling and the cupcakes will be white cake with white vanilla buttercream icing!
I've got a ton of leg work and prep work to get started on, designs to work out, a time schedule so I'm not crazy insane come the week of, and a whole lot of stuff I have to order online....

OH and if that's not enough, I have several cakes that have been ordred between now and the wedding, so if you need me, I'll either be at work, at pratice or in my kitchen working on a cake...Toss in 2 weddings, 2 birthday parties, a football game or two and four nights a week of pratice....I guess I'll sleep come November :)

The Man Cave Cake

Well tomorrow is the 3rd annual Man Cave party and Jimmy pretty much volunteered me to make a cake for it. And not just any cake, a cake made to look like "The Man Cave". The Man Cave is a detached garage that has been turned into a place to watch the games. It is decorated in all Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, Celtics, Chicago Bears, Beer and Scarface stuff. It's got multiple couches, several TV’s, surround sound, a beer fridge, a grill, dart board, basketball hoop, everything you need to have a good time. This is the hangout that all men wish their wives would let them have!!

So Jimmy asked me, if I would be capable of making a 3D cake of the Man Cave. “Sure” I said, after taking a minute to realize that he was seriously asking me to make this cake for Saturday and here it was Thursday afternoon. He said several times over that he’d help; well I hope he’s ready, because he’s going to work! Oh and did I tell you that Saturday I have to teach a class at 10, then I was hired to take photographs at a family reunion right before the party starts? Yeah, I’ll be sure to have an extra drink or two when this is all finished, I’ll tell you that!! So…I went and grabbed everything I needed to make the cakes last night, took 3 different stores to get it all. I baked up a chocolate sheet cake and a vanilla sheet cake to build the garage itself and it’s in the freezer doing its thing. I got up early this morning to make the icing and get things ready for the marathon decorating session tonight and I’m going to run out as soon as I can to get some more materials that I think I’ll need. The only thing that really has me stressing is the roof, I’m not sure what is going to be the best thing to construct it will be, and the humidity may come into play and that is what worries me.

There is going to be a TON of people there and this is my chance to show my skills off to a whole new crowd. So I’m kind of excited, a little nervous, yet confident that I can pull this off. I’ll keep y’all up to speed with all the sugar that’ll be flying tonight!!

Stay tuned for pictures of the process!!!

***UPDATE 7/19/10***
Ok so, It's not my best work, but not bad with the time I did have....
The party was a BLAST!!! I had so much fun, I can't wait until next years party!! Thanks Tony & Thanks Kim for hosting a kick a** bash!!

Ok, so I just opened my email this morning, and look what was there....

Hello Bridget!

Cory Vicens here with Allrecipes.com, and I’m working on our cool new project “What’s Cooking America” for Allrecipes and we are interested in your participation!

This summer Allrecipes video crew will be traveling across America meeting, interviewing and videotaping home cooks in their kitchens/homes to learn more about their tips, techniques, favorite recipes and food traditions. We will be visiting Rhode Island and are curious if you would consider letting us come to your home to ask you some questions about your cooking adventures while we film you preparing your favorite dish? This “webisode” will appear on Allrecipes.tv.

If you’re interested in participating please respond to my email by June 15, 2010

I need your help!!!!

Hey Everyone,

It's time to get started on this week's project!!

I was invited to Vermont this weekend to celebrate Memorial Day, and was asked to bring a cake. The cake is to celebrate my cousin's boyfriend's 25th birthday, who is an Iraq War Veteran and a Purple Heart Recipient!!!! However, he's on a wicked strict diet and won't actually be eating any of it, but my Aunt asked that I bring one up anyway since she LOVES cake!!

So my question is... what kind of cake do I make??? Chocolate?? White?? Marble?? Strawberry?? Carrot??

If you were hankering for a nice piece of cake, what kind would YOU want????

I also plan on bringing my signature chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal butterscotch cookies, and some blueberry muffins and maybe some banana muffins too, 'cause it'd be just plain wrong if I didn't!!!

Kelly's Cake....and the DRAMA!!!

My friend Kelly asked me if I would make her Bridal shower cake a few months ago. I gladly took the project and couldn't wait to start brainstorming. I googled, binged and yahooed every bridal shower cake you can imagine. I found some truly amazing works of art and others that are best left eaten, rather than displayed. I found myself at a loss and was overwhelmed with all the choices. She didn't care what it looked like or the flavors so long as it would feed approx 40 people and had the color Navy Blue somewhere on it. Well I found the perfect cake for her...or so I thought! I was going to go with a certain blue box with white bow, sitting on a round cake. However I've run into a problem with the blue box. I called the legal department of the company to see if they will give me permission to recreate their famous box & logo on a cake (or as a cake) . Since the cake is a gift made by a non professional, the gentlemen I spoke with didn't see it being a problem, but he'd still have to speak with an attorney.

So now here I am four days until the cake is due, and I don't know whether or not I'm going to be able to make it....

Stay tuned and keep those fingers crossed!!!

***Update: 5/20/10***

Well, still no call from the legal department of the certain blue box company. I'll give them until tomorrow to call me back, then I'll call them.

So today I'll start baking the cake, making the frosting, coloring the fondant, cutting out decorations and making the blue box bow all in hopes of keeping my original idea in place :)

In the mean time I've got to run out and pick up a few last minute ingredients and supplies for this weekend's baking festivities!!!

Hey, if anyone is bored and is looking for something to do... Call me, you can come do my dishes :)

***UPDATE: 5/25/10***

Well, the shower was a SUCCESS!!! After not getting a call back from the blue box company I went ahead and made the cake anyway.
The top tier (the box) was a Chocolate Grand Marnier cake with Raspberry Filling and the bottom tier was a White Pound cake with Buttercream frosting!!
Kelly was so thrilled with her cake, and several of her relatives thought it was professionally made :)
I even got an A+ from the Groom's 86 year old Grandma, you know you've done something right, when Grandma likes the cake!!

Ohh and before I forget, here it is.....

The Triple Superhero Cake

This is Dylan's cake! I made it for his Superhero themed 4th birthday party. The Batman layer is chocolate cake and white buttercream filling covered in yellow fondant and the Bat symbol and Gotham City as well. The Superman logo is royal icing and is a white cake with red buttercream filling covered in blue fondant. The spiderweb and writing are white chocolate.

He loved his cake and can't wait for his next one from "Auntie Gidgets"!!

Welcome

Welcome to Bee's Sweets & Treats!!

Here at Bee's Sweets & Treats we specialize in custom confections for all occasions.

I have had a love affair with sugar since before I was born. My Mom took cake decorating classes while pregnant with me and I've been hooked ever since. What started out as just making cookies, pies and desserts when the mood struck me to bake, quickly turned into my passion. I've taken just about every cake decorating course that has been offered in my area. I am also a founding Member of the Little Rhody Cake Club.

I will not say I'm an expert, a culinary whiz, or even a professional, but I will say that I love to bake and create new and exciting things.

I look forward to creating your dream dessert!!
